Jinchuan Group Co., Ltd., headquartered in Jinchang, Gansu province, was established in 1959. It is a State-controlled conglomerate under the People's Government of Gansu Province, specializing in mining, mineral processing, smelting, chemical production, and advanced processing.
It owns the world's third-largest copper-nickel sulfide deposit, and serves as China's nickel and cobalt production base, a platinum group metals refining center, and northern China's largest copper producer. Its products, including nickel, copper, cobalt, gold, silver, platinum group metals, advanced nonferrous materials, and chemicals, are widely used in construction, machinery, petrochemicals, new energy, battery manufacturing, and biomedicine.
In the 1960s, Jinchuan's pioneers built China's first nickel, cobalt, and platinum group metals production line, ending the country's shortage of nickel and cobalt. After the country’s reform and opening-up, a nationwide scientific and technological endeavor was launched to ensure the comprehensive utilization of Jinchuan's resources. Jinchuan was then listed as one of China's three major bases for the comprehensive utilization of mineral resources, marking the beginning of its transformation into a technology-driven enterprise.
Entering the 21st century, Jinchuan has leveraged both domestic and international markets and resources to achieve rapid growth in comprehensive strength. Since 2018, the group has fully applied the new development philosophy, advancing efforts to establish a globally competitive, world-class enterprise. It has accelerated high-quality development and entered a new chapter in its pursuit of excellence. In 2026, Jinchuan ranked 213th on the Fortune Global 500 and 54th on the Fortune China 500.
Jinchuan Group engages in the development of non-ferrous metal resources and the promotion of industrial, technological, and supply chain collaboration across 20 provincial-level regions in China and over 30 countries worldwide. Its seven major business sectors are: nickel and cobalt, copper and precious metals, battery material, non-ferrous metal new materials, chemical engineering, new energy, and productive services. Its nickel output ranks second worldwide, while cobalt is fourth, copper third in China, and mined platinum group metals first in Asia.
The group boasts two national-level innovation platforms - the State Key Laboratory for the Development and Comprehensive Utilization of Nickel, Cobalt and Associated Resources; and the Research Center of Engineering Technology for New Materials of Nickel and Cobalt. It also established academician and expert workstations and postdoctoral workstations.
Meanwhile, it has formed an innovation system featuring complete professional fields, diverse innovation entities, upstream-downstream coordination, and multi-system complementarity, and has achieved a series of important results in the nonferrous metals field.
Jinchuan has won multiple national-level science and technology awards, including the Special Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the China Industrial Award.
The development of Jinchuan Group has received strong support and guidance from national leaders.
