On Tuesday, a 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck Dingri county in the city of Shigatse in Xizang autonomous region, with 126 people confirmed killed and another 188 injured. The housing stock in the area has also suffered significant damage.

The earthquake disaster area is located in a high-altitude, frigid region, with the winter conditions compounding the plight of the affected population and presenting extra challenges for rescue teams.
